Is it safe to drink from them?

Fountain water is the same supply as the tap, so the answer is whatever the answer is for Rome's tap water. That is a question with published figures behind it rather than an opinion.

How they work

Block the mouth of the spout with a finger and the water arches up through a hole on top, so you can drink without putting your mouth to the tap.

Where they come from

The nasoni date from 1874, from an idea of the then mayor Luigi Pianciani. The oldest had three decorated dragon-shaped nozzles, and some of those survive: on Piazza della Rotonda, on Via di San Teodoro behind the Roman Forum, and on Via delle Tre Cannelle. In the historic centre alone the tourist board counts over 200 nasoni and around ninety further fountains running drinking water.

That is a monument, not a drinking fountain. Rome has both, and the words for them are the same in English, which is why this page and that search collide. You cannot drink from the Trevi Fountain; the ones you can drink from are the nasoni above.

Most of these fountains are anonymous street taps and there is nothing to say about them. A few are not: these are the ones OpenStreetMap links to a catalogued record, so the description and the photograph both come from somewhere checkable.

Most of the 568 are anonymous street taps and a list of them would be the same line many times over, so they stay on the map. These are the ones with a name, a bottle-filling spout, or step-free access.

How many are there in total

The 568 above are the ones in the centre that OpenStreetMap has recorded. Across the whole city there are far more: Roma Capitale's tourist board puts the number at around 2,500, running since 1874.

Fountain locations come from OpenStreetMap contributors, refreshed 1 September 2026. A fountain that is mapped is not guaranteed to be running: they are turned off for repairs, and in some cities over winter.
